On 2 June 2014, villagers affected by the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) submitted an official complaint to JICA in Tokyo. They claim that JICA has failed to comply with its own Guidelines for Environmental and Social Considerations when supporting and overseeing the SEZ project and relocation of villagers for the project.
On 4 July 2014, JICA made a formal decision to complete an investigation of the claims filed by the villagers.
This is the first time since JICA established its Environmental and Social Guidelines that JICA is investigating an official complaint filed by people affected by one of their projects.
